beginners
**
some gentle slopes for the complete beginner. ideal terrain at Sunnegga, or after a spectacular cogwheel train journey, (and a little tuition) the slopes of Gornergrat.
intermediates
*****
perfect for intermediates who demand a variety of runs and scenic descents through trees. head for the Unterrothorn (on the cablecar) to try the challenging red runs, with one taking you all the way back to Zermatt. plan a day trip to Cervinia (inc. in area pass) and try the 8km run from the Plateau Rosa. Magic.
advanced
*****
confident skiers should try the challenging blacks, fantastic off-piste and guaranteed snow (its a glacier resort). try europe's longest and most difficult mogul slopes (the trifti). or, have a go at the gun-barrel Tiefbach descent, the Schwarzsee, Stockhorn and Klein Matterhorn for challenging steep descents.
snowboarding
***
go with a guide to experience the many powder bowls and couloirs. heli-boarding is popular here. head over to the Rotenboden snowpark for jumps with tables, halfpipe, quarter and bumps. beginners should head for the long, gentle slopes high on the mountain.
